Filming for the highly anticipated sequel to Freaky Friday has officially begun.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are set to reunite, reprising their iconic roles as the mother-daughter duo Tess and Anna Coleman. This comes 21 years after the original 2003 family classic hit cinemas.

On June 24th, Walt Disney Studios announced on Twitter, “The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025! The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production!”

The announcement was accompanied by a photo of Curtis, 65, and Lohan, 37, sitting on the steps of their trailers, holding hands.

Although Lohan and Curtis had been hinting at Freaky Friday 2 throughout 2023, it wasn’t until May this year that Disney officially confirmed the sequel’s production.

In February, Jamie Lee Curtis sparked rumours by posting a photo of her and Lohan on Instagram with the caption, “It’s Friday. I’m just sayin! Freaky fingers crossed!”

In a subsequent interview, Curtis confirmed the news. “It’s going to happen. Without saying there’s anything officially happening, I’m looking at you in this moment and saying, ‘Of course it’s going to happen.’ It’s going to happen.”

The original Freaky Friday stars Lohan as rebellious teenager Anna Coleman and Curtis as her mother Tess Coleman. The film follows the pair as they swap bodies and are forced to live each other’s lives.

Joining Lohan and Curtis in the sequel are returning cast members Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao.

The sequel also introduces new cast members Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Sophia Hammons.

Nisha Ganatra will be directing the movie; she recently directed episodes of Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendales and the feature films The High Note, starring Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross, and Late Night, starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson.

The Enduring Charm of Freaky Friday

In the summer of 2003, Buena Vista released a film that would become a beloved staple in the world of family comedies: Freaky Friday.

Directed by Mark Waters, the movie starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother-daughter duo who magically swap bodies.

The film not only captivated audiences but also cemented its place as a cult classic, thanks to its engaging performances, heartfelt humour, and timeless themes.

Freaky Friday is a modern adaptation of the 1977 film of the same name, which starred Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster.

Both films are based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel, wherein a mother and daughter wake up one Friday the 13th to find they have switched bodies.

This fantastical scenario forces them to experience each other’s lives, leading to a deeper understanding and appreciation for one another.

The Perfect Pair: Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan

Initially, Annette Bening (American Beauty) and Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) were cast as the leads.

However, due to scheduling conflicts and last-minute changes, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan stepped into the roles.

This casting change proved fortuitous, as the chemistry between Curtis and Lohan was palpable, adding an extra layer of authenticity to their performances.

Curtis, primarily known for her roles in horror films like Halloween, showcased her comedic prowess as the uptight, overworked mother, Tess Coleman.

Lohan, fresh off her success in The Parent Trap, delivered a standout performance as the rebellious teenager, Anna Coleman. Their dynamic brought humour and heart to the film, resonating with audiences of all ages.

Released on August 6, 2003, Freaky Friday was produced on a budget of $26 million and grossed an impressive $160.8 million worldwide.

Over the years, Freaky Friday has maintained its status as a cult classic. Its themes of empathy, family, and self-discovery remain relevant, making it a favourite for both new and returning viewers.

The film’s soundtrack, featuring catchy songs like Ultimate performed by Lohan, also contributed to its popularity.

The film’s legacy continues to grow, with fans eagerly awaiting the upcoming sequel.

As we look forward to Freaky Friday 2, we can fondly reflect on the original film and appreciate its lasting impact on popular culture.

Whether you’re watching it for the first time or the fiftieth, Freaky Friday continues to charm, entertain, and remind us of the magic that happens when we see the world through someone else’s eyes.

Freaky Friday 2 is set for release in 2025.
